A Managed VPS means the hosting provider manages the server and all the pre-installed applications on it like Server OS, supporting scripts, Database, Web server, Control panel(if any). Any custom or 3rd party application dosen't come under Server Management.

It basically depends on what the Host decides what their management policy is. However, a typical managed vps host will do just about anything you ask them with the default applications and software's they provide.

Basically when the hosting company offers you a managed server/VPS he offers to take care of all the server side issues, so that you do not have to get involved in the same. The server side management can include Routine server monitoring, Regular maintenance of the operating system (updates & patches), troubleshooting etc.

It is a good point to make that managed VPS doesn't come with support for custom and third party software. But, keep in mind that your hosting provider will help you with the issues that can arise when using custom or third party software. But, that type of support is usually billed by the hour. It is a good tidbit of information to be aware of before you decide to contact your host.

A managed server basically means that webhosting company will take care of most of the issues of your server. Usually, if you are not experienced, you'll face problems with server configuration, DNS setup, apache recompilation, cPanel setup etc. However, on the other hand, if you get a manged dedicated server or a VPS, you can sleep well, they'll take care of most of the problems arising in your server as well as control Panel updates and security patches !

There are different types of managed hosting plans with managed hosting. You should consult hosting companies about management plans before sign up for managed hosting.

    Re: What's Managed VPS?

Managed VPS services are all different depending on the company's policy for the management. Management in general means that a client would get assistance with his VPS for issues that are not essential to keeping his VPS up and running. It's also good to note that if you go un-managed it doesn't mean that you won't get technical support at all, if the issue is related to a technical issue that is preventing your VPS from functioning properly you would still get assistance with an un-managed package. Personalization and further configuration require management packages and depending on the company you may get basic to very advanced support.
