For running ecommerce sites efficiently, I will always recommend GooD reliable web hosting provider and of course Magento Commerce shopping cart software.

For me, Magento commerce shopping cart is the best one. You will be satisfied running your sites (e-stores, e-shops, etc.) with magento shopping cart software.

OS Commerce is the best. I believe that you will be satisfied using it. The software features a familiar shopping cart model, with a number of ways to access the product catalog.
osCommerce is customizable and expandable by someone with the right skills or the desire to learn.

There are many types of shopping carts available, both proprietary and open source. Although proprietary solutions have their benefits, such as good support and maintenance services, you can find great solutions for your ecommerce web host, free of cost. Usually, your ecommerce web host will come with a few shopping carts preinstalled. Some of the most commonly offered ecommerce applications are X-Cart, osCommerce, Magento, and Agora.

We've done sites in both OsCommerce and Magento, and prefer Magento.

OSC was good years ago, but it just seems to have been left as is over the years.

I've seen many entrepreneurs who've used Oscommerce and have actually switched to magento. And I would also recommend Magento, but remember Magento requires a good amount of resources and it can be slow if not setup properly. Even, it is possibly one of the hardest ecommerce available in the market. And if you are planning to customize it, then it would probably costly. On the other hand Oscommerce is OK software, but the only reason I am suggesting it, because it is pretty outdated now.

Since I last posted on this thread I have been hearing many good things about Magento. Some say it can be a little difficult to master but it does have almost all of the features that even the best and most heavily trafficked sites need.

It really depends on what you are looking for. With packages such as magenta and OScommerce you need to upload the script to the hosting space and install it, unless the provider runs a a script that will install the package for you.

You could opt for a template based ecommerce system that has everything pre-installed.
